People often ask if I can help them get a grant for their big idea that they would like to turn into a charity. I am quiet about that I have been successful in the non-profit world because the process of attaining a grant is so much more than my grandmothers friend who loves Lamas can fathom.
In the eyes of the fundor they are responsible to someone for any money they grant and must be sure the money given to your organization is spent correctly.
…. (My rates are about 200 words below, however, I would read my qualifications first)
How I know what I know
In 2005 I started a not-for-profit to help find homes for hard to place children who were living in foster care. I scoured the database and took every class available at the non-profit development center.
I wrote our by-laws and was given an expedited non-profit status from the IRS (yes – “The” IRS) within a week. I duplicated this effort for other non-profits, there is a way to usually get it quick, if you really need it.
I wrote a grant for myself and the president of my board to attend a non-profit development course at the circle of 10. Within a month I was writing grants to the Arts Council of Texas for musicians to entertain at the the local farmers market and the president of my board wrote a 3 million dollar VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) federal grant and received it. (It was a really good class- He is a legend in that small town!)
The second grant that I received was an educational grant that gave me one-on-one instruction by a foundation loan officer teaching me the steps to become a “fundable entity“. After six months I applied for a grant to this foundation and it was awarded two years in a row.
To raise money for the non-profit I saw a need within the state and wrote a proposal to create a training video for Child Protective Services adoption workers. This too was awarded and we had all the funding we needed to accomplish our goals!
I have written multi-dimensional budgets, bylaws, corporate structure outlines and volunteer guidelines. I am well versed in the non-profit world and I can explain the ins and outs of going this route to save the whales or whatever your passion.
Are grants out there for my organization?
Possibly, but you have to know where to look and have some initial funding to research them and get yourself organized enough to be qualified to receive them. This money usually comes from private donors you already know. (Most grants will not be given if their grant money is going to fund a “grant writer”.)
What are your rates for helping with my non-profit?
The first call is free. Consultations are discounted 20% for non-profits or those who think they want to be a non-profit. My normal hourly rate is $80. If we decide to work together I will write you a proposal that you can take to your initial fundor. I will be happy to work incrementally so that you can show accountability to the one who pays your bills! I keep close track of my time and bill by the quarter hour. (I also love saving the Whales so you will find that I am very easy to work with if you have a true calling!) From now until January of 2019 I will be offering a 50% discount on my normal rates.
