Adopted at 16
Most of my real writing experience, I believe, came when I started interviewing orphans who wanted help finding the perfect parents. I had written articles and advertisements for years, but this was a real challenge. I did not ask about their past, it was all about dreaming of their future. What did they hope for in a home? A family? Did they want to live in the city or the country? Did they want siblings and pets? What did they hope to be when they grew up? What kind of parents did they want? A stay-at-home mom? Sports or video games? The questions had to change for each child.
(My rates are about a hundred words down, but please read “Adopted at 16” first!)
I interviewed and re-wrote over 200 of the articles for the state to make each child’s personality shine and reach out to just the right mom and dad. It is daunting to consider adopting a minority child over 8 or siblings??!! What would they be able to talk about? What did they have in common?
I had to share the child’s deepest desires without compromising their privacy. The potential parents had to have something that made that connection. “I love to cook” one white parent ( I say white here because the writing had to cross the race barrier every post) said of a 16 year old black boy who wanted to attend culinary school.. (He and his brother were adopted together by these veterinarians within a year of the post.)

Experiences:
My recent articles ranged from scouting for a 2,500 mile transcontinental horse-drawn journey to 7 word ads helping clients sell insurance. I have outlined ways to raise creative children, improve your mood using color therapy, written step-by-step planning guidelines for planning a second wedding and created a plan to avoid traffic using google type live mapping with helicopter reporting before there was Google . Consistently readable at the sentence level, Denice speaks directly to the reader with good humored usable prose. In September of 2014 Denice’s piece, “Summer Camp for Adults” published as a feature article in Driving Digest as the first of what she calls her “Transportation” series. We are still waiting to see if Yard Sale on a Tuesday runs in the Reader’s Digest!. Call Me!! 903-521-4570 denicebarton@gmail.com
I have written hundreds of articles, advertisements and bios for The East Texas Heart Gallery. We were very successful at our mission.
Below are a few of the articles I have had published. I will add more as I scan them in. Please review my blog for a light-hearted read. And yes, I love horses!
