Creating a Situation where you Can Take a Vacation

Just a few years ago I came a cross a man I will refer to as the Tasmanian Devil. He was constantly spinning out of control and extremely frustrated with his 28 year old business that was still making him money. The problem was that he could not find anyone to be responsible enough to let him have any time off.

After a few weeks I realized it was because no one could duplicate his efforts because happy daysthey were all in his head. A few weeks later after following Taz around and writing down all of his processes and questioning the ones that were questionable we determined that beyond the processes were the variables that fluctuated too often. Things like, “That is an old customer and we have to do things different for them”. This was more of the rule than the exception. The next thing to document and place into the customer database were all of these exceptions.

That said, it took rewriting the help wanted ad quite a few times to get exactly what the company needed to survive if Taz took a vacation. It has been over a year now and Taz is spending his summers in a cooler climate and is planning for some much needed snow skiing this winter thanks to the angel we put behind his desk.
